Construction & Challenges
This build carried real technical complexity behind its refined finish. The fireplace alone was a major undertaking — a 190mm solid core-filled blockwork wall built from slab height right up to the underside of the roof, essentially a concrete wall at its core. Internal vents at the top and bottom, with a false ceiling built into the chamber between them, were engineered to retain heat within the house. Once the blockwork was complete, imported stone was laid across the full height of the fireplace, both internally and externally — a feature wall from floor to roof that now anchors the cathedral ceiling in the kitchen and living area.
The dining room's raked roof was cut through with three skylights, flooding the space with natural light. Structurally, one of the biggest challenges was building the new raked roof while keeping the existing roof sheeting intact — propping and cutting out the existing trusses from underneath, then building heightened walls to form the raked section, all while the original roof stayed in place overhead. Tying the new roofline into the existing roof, and getting the heights and angles to align correctly, took careful sequencing throughout.
Sourcing added its own pressure — imported products fell short of what had been ordered, requiring air freight to get materials on site in time to finish before Christmas and keep the project on schedule.
The finer details demanded the same precision: a herringbone marble pattern in the bathroom, with tiles aligned exactly and cuts finished cleanly around the tile insert drain.
Indoor-Outdoor Living
The extension blurs the line between inside and out, with the alfresco area extending the home's everyday living space beyond its walls. The continuous wraparound deck carries this further, wrapping fully around the home to take advantage of the acreage setting and creating a natural flow between indoor and outdoor spaces for everyday living and entertaining alike.
The Finished Home
The result is a home that has grown in scale and liveability without losing the heritage charm that made it special in the first place. Every addition was made with intention — designed to work with the original character of the house, not against it — delivering a refined, functional home that feels as though it always belonged on its acreage setting in Kangaroo Valley.
